Fall Outfit Ideas

Aug 21, 2018

Fall is upon us! Football, apple pie, and all things pumpkin spice are right around the corner.  As summer comes to a close, it's time replace your tank tops with hoodies, kimonos with cardigans, and sandals with booties.  Whether you are planning on shopping for all new pieces or just sorting through what to keep and get rid of, we suggest you prepare before the cold hits.

Clothing trends of the harvest season offer a range of casual and sophisticated options. Fall doesn't always mean oversized sweaters and leggings; we encourage you to get outside your comfort zone and try a jumpsuit or chic blazer.

Our boutique specializes in clothing for real women. Even amongst the craziness of our lives, we want to help you feel your best at any occasion. This guide covers five different fall occasions and realistic outfit options for each.

  1. Comfy Casual
  2. Business Beauty
  3. Fan Favorite
  4. Date Night
  5. Formal yet Feminine

Some of the best days of fall include snuggling underneath your favorite blanket, warm coffee in hand,  and burning your favorite autumn scent. Maybe you are getting some things done around the house, catching up on laundry, or just hanging with the family. The best pieces for comfy fall days are big sweaters, cardigans, leggings, long socks and a soft beanie to keep warm.

On top:  Layers, layers, layers! A  basic three-quarter tee, v-neck, or turtleneck are great bottom layers for staying comfy. Remember that your first layer should be the longest. Looking for more warmth? A basic cardigan or over-sized sweater is a great essential to have for lazy days.

On bottom: Leggings and joggers are an obvious choice for relaxing kick-backs, but sometimes a stretchy jegging can be just as cozy. Paired with your favorite fuzzy socks, you are ready for the snuggle bus!  If you're out for a casual run to the grocery store, a casual sneaker or pair of soft booties!

  1. Fan Favorite

It's game day! Whether you're cheering in the stands or making treats for the tailgate, keep in mind the basic the better. If you arrive in a  floral dress or lace romper, you may feel a little of place.  A simple tank top & ripped jeans paired with statement accessories is simple yet stylish!

On top: Always have coordinating layers on hand for chilly game days. Even if you don't wear a shirt with your team's logo, doesn't mean you can't represent!  A solid crisscross tank paired with a plaid button-up in your team's colors or a solid yellow tee with a blue elbow patch for our South Dakota State girls. If it's on the warmer side, pair a tank with a sheer colored scarf, large pair of sunglasses, or cute ball-cap.

On bottom:  Jeans and shorts are a great go-to. Long shirts pair well with warm leggings. Switch it up and wear a neutral color on top and your team's color on the bottom (unless it's a crazy lime green of course). If you are a tailgating queen, your closet deserves a pair of cute rain boots! Whether you're at a viewing party or big game, there's a big chance you'll spend a lot of time on your feet whether you're at a. Pick something comfortable and easy to walk in like a sneaker or short-heeled boot.

  1. The Business Beauty

It's time for work, dressing professional while also staying warm is ideal.

On top: Fuzzy vests and blazers take any solid or patterned top to the next level. Form-fitting turtlenecks and sweaters paired with a statement necklace or scarf is the perfect touch of sophistication. Unless winter's chills arrive early, most days we can get away with a long modest dress.

 Fall Fashion Trends

On bottom: Maxi skirts, leather leggings, jeans, or slacks (depending on how formal) are all options to give your look extra poise. Choose the best bottom based on your top. Shirts can be tucked in or let out when paired with leggings, jeans, or slacks. If you decide on a maxi skirt, we recommend tucking in all blouses to avoid losing your frame. Of course, you can't wrong with adding jewelry to bring your outfit all together. If you prefer heels, choose a subtle wedge over a high pump. We also recommend selecting a short bootie instead of an over-the-knee lace-up boot.

  1. Date Night

It's finally time to put away responsibilities and enjoy a nice dinner or night out with the girls. There is no need to break it down between top & bottom choices because one-piece options are a match made in heaven! A long sleeve dress with tall boots shows just enough skin to stay warm and flattering. Layer your dress with a blazer, furry vest or statement necklace.

Date Night

  1. Formal yet Feminine

A day of classes, a trip to the pumpkin patch, church with the family, or a casual day at the office? These type of outfits are land right between date night and comfy casual. The pieces below are versatile, meaning you can create more outfits without having to purchase an abundance of items!

On Top: Vests and jackets are just what your wardrobe is missing! Having a variety of solid tops and jackets results in many combinations. Cowl neck sweaters, floral blouses, and sweater jackets are simple pieces that have just enough detail to be stunning alone.

Formal yet Feminine

On Bottom: Let your blouse and shoes do the talking and select classic skinny jeans or black leather leggings. A medium sized heel is the ideal height. Shoes with subtle details are a great addition without being overwhelming or clashing with a bright top.  If you have two layers or more, choose a simple necklace option. Statement necklaces formalize simple sweaters and blouses. Accessorize with cross-body or maybe a blanket scarf, the choice is yours!
