Noun: A wardrobe containing limited clothing articles that can be mixed and matched, worn during any season- never going out of style.
A capsule wardrobe is a fashion lifestyle term coined in the 1970s by Susie Faux, who founded a London boutique appropriately named "Wardrobe" due to frustrations in finding quick outfits! Before there was the KonMari method, there was Zuzie faux, transforming the closets of men and women worldwide.
In recent years, this movement has resurfaced as minimalism and sustainability are in the spotlight of every fashion magazine, blog, or Youtube. Some social media influencers dedicate their whole brand just to capsule wardrobing! Having a capsule wardrobe is a fantastic way to edit your closet and start a more eco-conscious lifestyle. Did you know that an average of 100,000 tons of textile waste ends up in landfills each year in the US alone? This eco-concern is one major reason why many are switching back to the Capsule Wardrobe. Another reason for this trend is simply because we are busy! No one wants to spend an hour trying on clothes before finding the right outfit. Limiting your clothes limits your choices! Easy as that. By only having 30-40 pieces of clothing, you have just enough articles to mix and match outfits, saving loads of time getting dressed.
But, where to begin? That is what many struggle with- beginning. The trick is keeping clothes that can easily be paired with others without clashing. The rule of thumb is to have 33 pieces! Count what you already have in your wardrobe; this may surprise you.
To help you get started, we thought it would be fun to show you some examples of what to have in your wardrobe!
To start, you want to begin with some tops that are very simple and versatile. The idea is to stick with pieces that could be dressed up to down! Think minimal detail, not too busy, and solid colors. Of course, this doesn’t mean you can’t have fun! We recommend something like our LOVE LIFE STUD DETAIL ON SLEEVE'S short sleeve top in white. This top is simple with a fun touch of fringe! It can easily be work from day to night and paired with almost anything.
For bottoms, you want a couple of pairs of jeans, shorts, or skirts if desired. The idea is to have quality pieces that will last a long time! You want to make sure that your bottoms are pieces that you love and feel amazing wearing.
As for dresses, you would want to have pieces that can be worn throughout the seasons! Reference our previous blog on little black dresses for inspiration! You want a casual dress, a night out dress, and a business dress. You can have fun trying on as many as you want, and then donating the ones you decide to let go!
This step is the hard part for many. I don’t know about you, but I have a personal attachment to my shoes! The trick is keeping pairs that are neutral that you adore and wear most often. Allow yourself shoes that are comfortable and for multiple occasions. You won’t even miss the others!
Loungewear can be as fun and eccentric as you please. But, most importantly, keep it comfy! You only want pieces that you are going to love in your wardrobe and last a very long time.
